I too have seen some internet debate about this topic at the moment and I have seen it get quite heated. For me the topic isn't black and white and I agree with the points you have raised questioning whether women should be criminalised for having a drink at a wedding or if a woman is unaware that she is in the early stages of pregnancy. However the effects of both drink and drugs on a baby/child are unfair and I believe that if a women chooses to have her baby then she has a responsibility to do everything in her power to protect and nurture the life growing inside of her. You're so right about it not making a difference. Again, like anything, it won't effect the people who ignore the law anyway, they'll drink and take drugs whether it's illegal or not.
Funnily enough, from my view point, it's not the people with addiction who make me angry (they do, but for a different reason) but the average, educated woman who thinks it's ok to drink a glass of wine every day with her meal "because it's fine". These people should know better....nearly half my friends drank while pregnant and they're all "middle class" educated individuals.
I do hope this little girl wins her case and gets the compensation she deserves which may set a precedent without it actually having to become "illegal".
Thank you for a thought provoking, well written article. Actually it would be fairer to say that my previous opinions have eroded - many things that looked clear cut to me before are now murky and too multi-faceted to allow for a definite opinion at all!
